The Link between Friends and Happiness
The strong bond of friendship is not always a balanced equation; friendship is not always about giving and taking in equal shares. Instead, friendship is grounded in a feeling that you know exactly who will be there for you when you need something, no matter what or when. Simon Sinek
Happiness is a lifelong pursuit. A crucial ingredient in lifelong happiness is the connection to others and deep, lasting friendships. Friends are a gift to be treasured, and their role in our lives includes the ability to bring us happiness and joy. Here is how your friends and your happiness are related.
More Sociable People Are Rated as Happier
It has been studied and shown that individuals who are more sociable are also happier people. As we age, it gets more difficult to find friends and meet people on a regular basis than when we were children. Those who seek out friendships and rate this as important, also rate themselves as being happier.
Individuals who isolate themselves fall more easily into depression and stress. Introverts need friends just as much as extroverts do, and friends can help take the edge off of loneliness and sadness. Even if you are not a natural extrovert, make a point of building friendships in order to contribute towards your mental health and happiness.
Friends who hold us accountable
Friends that hold us accountable can improve our lives in so many ways. If you decide to go back to school and you are hesitant if your friend keeps reminding you about it more than likely you will move forward with it. Another issue we have is starting a fitness routine, so we definitely need that push from our friends. Friends hold us accountable because they care about our well-being. Can you imagine if there was no one looking out for you how it would feel? I do not know about you but I like the feeling when others show interest in my well-being.
Friends that want you to improve your life, genuinely love you. I can remember some years ago my friend borrowed some money for a mutual friend of ours, now our friend needed to do some construction on her house but she was not making any move. Our dear friend who had borrowed the money just went and purchase some building materials with the money she owed her friend and sent it to her home; soon after the work started on the house. I am not recommending that you do that, you need to know the personality of your friend and her financial standing before you do that; you could do that to someone who really needs their cash to spend and it causes problems. My friend embodies who a true friend should be, she is always looking out and for us and always wants to see us improve our lives.

Strong Friendships Are Known to Lessen Depression and Stress
People who rely on others to lift them up tend to be less stressed and depressed. Having a close friend you can talk to about your problems can serve as an important aid in releasing negative feelings. Confiding in a friend tends to reverse feelings of loneliness, and most friends offer words of comfort which affects you in a positive way, knowing that someone cares. Stress brings on a lot of illness, so we need people in our lives who understand us so we can be our self with them. Speaking to our friends about our problems will help us to feel better.
Being the one your friend asks for encouragement has positive benefits too, as it enforces the belief that you are needed and important. Having a happy friend heightens a person’s happiness, yet having a sad friend doesn’t affect you in equal proportions. This means that the benefits of friendship always outweigh the drawbacks. Having that friend who makes you laugh until you cry, we all need a friend like that in our lives; if you don’t have one, find one.
Everyone collectively gains benefits through friendship, no matter whether you or your friend start out happy or not.
Positive Friends Affect Those around Them
Happiness is contagious. When you are around someone who is positive, life feels better. It doesn’t matter how stressed you might feel when you are alone; getting together with a good friend is therapeutic. Make a choice to spend the majority of your time with people who are committed to a positive outlook on life. Encourage friends who need encouragement, but spend most of your time with those who are uplifting to your emotions. You will find yourself feeling more and more that way as time goes on.
Be a positive friend who encourages others as well. As the positive energy rubs off on you, so it should then rub off on those around you. Make a choice to encourage your friends, and to leave them feeling better than before they saw you.
Your Friends Adjust to Your Needs
Close friends have been shown to be flexible in their support of us. This means that if you are trying to lose five pounds for fun and you are being tempted by a craving, a good friend will likely indulge with you.
On the other hand, if your health depends on losing weight, a good friend is more likely to hold you accountable and help you stick to your decision. Good friends help you say no when it matters and help you say yes when you simply need to de-stress.
Let go of selfish friends
Friendship is a 2-way street, if you have a friend who believes that it all about him or her; you know that friend who never has time for anyone or anything; get them out of your life. Friendship is about being there for each other. It is great when we are feeling down and we know who to call. Please let go of the friends who never have time for you but want you to drop everything when they come calling. When you are there for each other the link between friends and happiness will be seen and that is a healthy relationship that will bring joy to your life.
Friends should be there for you in the good and the bad times. they should share in your wins and your disappointment. Good friends have each other backs no matter what. So long as you choose the right friends you will be a very happy person.
Friendships are important in regards to happiness. When you are a good friend who also chooses good friends, the benefits multiply. Choose friendship, and enrich your happiness in a great way.
